Here is the first final of this Australian tour with a very nice line-up. We were looking forward to seeing Ashleigh Barty again after 11 months without competition. We were not disappointed. There was nothing to say about her performances of the week. The tennis quality is still there. You don't lose that when you're number one in the world. But physically, we feel that she is far from being in optimal shape and that she is preserving herself and it is completely normal for a return to competition. Her toughest trick was her quarter-final against Rogers. She really could have been eliminated. Barty got pushed around for most of the match. Shelby insisted with a lot of commitment and it was the right strategy because the Australian was easily overwhelmed. In the end, Barty won a little bit with experience and notably by building up his points with his palette of play which is, as you know, magical. Muguruza was expeditious from A to Z. On each of her sets, she never cashed in more than 2 sets. She really impresses with maximum commitment at every point. Muguruza stays on the continuity of 2020 with much more serenity than in 2018/2019 to compare. It is in the service where she had gaps. But on this tournament, her percentage was very high. Physically, she is very (very) well, you can feel it in her movements and in her combativeness. She attacks as soon as possible and takes every opportunity she can. She has proposed a game that is both very structured and very punchy. But of course, she knows that her opponent in the final will be of a different calibre: "I've played Barty several times, I'm expecting another tough battle. But I love the energy of the fans in Melbourne. » Muguruza is therefore much more in rhythm physically. Barty, even if she is very experienced, will probably not want to draw on her reserves with only one day to go before the start of the AO knowing that she is not yet at 100% of her means. Whereas Muguruza, despite a successful 2020 season, hasn't won a single title since April 2019 in Monterrey. This is the opportunity or never, on a tournament that she has dominated from start to finish - a bit like Swiatek at Roland Garros - to come and win her first title in almost two years. She is largely physically fit and hasn't lost much energy on the courts since the beginning.
