Nice French-French duel in perspective! A duel also of generations since the two tricolours are a little more than 11 years apart. Experience or recklessness, who will win? On the form of the moment, small advantage to Clara Burel, who has accumulated more victories and confidence since the beginning of the year. It was during the qualifications of the Australian Open, during which she managed to take 3 victories in a row, before losing a few weeks later in the first round in Melbourne, against the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck (4-6, 6-3, 6-4). For Alizé Cornet, the first weeks of 2021 have been a little bit complicated: 2 wins for 3 defeats, among them one in the second round of the Australian Grand Slam against Ann Li (N°69 in the world) and especially another one in the Phillip Island Trophy, still in Melbourne, against Australian Kimberley Birrell, only 745th in the WTA. Both of them come to Lyon to get some good sensations. Much better ranked, the Niçoise (N°59) is a versatile and eye-catching player, particularly intelligent in the science of counter-attacking. With 6 titles in her career, including one on indoor hard court (Katowice 2014), she has the advantage of being able to manage oppositions well against her compatriots (and often friends). She leads 1/0 against Kristina Mladenovic and, even if she is outstripped by Caroline Garcia (2/3), it is indeed her who won the last two confrontations. This psychological element will perhaps be less easy to manage for the young Rennaise. That said, the 218th world champion, former finalist at the Australian Open and the US Open in the junior category (in 2018), has a lot of character. She showed it in particular in the first round of Roland Garros by winning in 3 sets against Arantxa Rus, after having been led a set at zero and 5/6, serve against her, in the second act. The bookmakers give a little extra to Alizé Cornet (1.61 against 2.32), which seems quite logical on paper. It remains for Clara Burel to show that her precision, counter-feet and good hand can make the predictions go wrong.

The eye of Julien Varlet: This is typically the kind of match that Alizé Cornet ends up winning. Against another French woman, younger, she really knows how to do it. She has this self-confidence and this psychological advantage, that of managing matches at this level, in order to win, and she has often done so in the past. Certainly, Clara Burel has a nice little game. But she still lacks power. And faced with a player who runs everywhere and against perfectly, it will be difficult for the Breton. Besides, we really feel that Alizé wants to show that she is still there, especially during a tournament in France. We know her qualities as a warrior. Finally, her big lifts should disrupt her younger daughter's pace.
